I find it's the quickest way to resolve these problems. Changing the IRQ through the Configuration Panel of Windows doesn't work too well, especially if you have devices like a printer and network card also installed. These are self-extracting archives, so put them into a temporary folder (one for each driver) before executing them. I had a similar problem when exiting from Windows into DOS: sound would play, but it would be just random noise.
A Soundscape in the same system will interfere with the AWE if both cards use the same settings. You can also try disabling any parallel port the laptop may have, if the BIOS gives you that option. I've seen bits and pieces of info around the net about needing to enable dos drivers. We also recommend that you update the drivers for the soundcard.
